link 2011-10-14

Cologne, 14 October 2011. Nexigen GmbH, a biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutic peptides to fight cancer, announced the appointment of Dr. Jörg Vollmer as CEO and member of the management board of the company. Dr. Vollmer is the former CEO of Coley Pharmaceutical GmbH, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc., and brings in experiences from both biotech and pharma. The acquisition of Dr. Vollmer will strongly support the current growth phase of the company to become a leading drug developer for innovative therapeutics in cancer.

Nexigen GmbH is in the process to extend its activities from drug discovery towards drug development. In order to support the rapid growth the company appointed Dr. Jörg Vollmer as CEO and member of the management board.
Dr. Vollmer was formerly Managing Director of Coley Pharmaceutical GmbH, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc. Between 2008 and 2011 Coley Pharmaceutical did belong to the Pfizer Research. Therefore he brings in management skills from both the biotech and pharma world. As part of Pfizer’s Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Unit (OTU) he concentrated on the development of nucleic acid therapeutics to suppress disease genes such as siRNA and antisense. This field perfectly matches Nexigen’s positioning as a developer of innovative drugs targeting so far inaccessible disease mechanisms.
Before 2008 Dr. Vollmer held several senior management positions at Coley Pharmaceutical Group, latest as Vice President Discovery & Development. In this role he was responsible for the identification and evaluation of novel product candidates and new research and application areas. Coley Pharmaceutical was a pioneer in developing a class of drug candidates called TLR Therapeutics, oligonucleotide drugs to modulate the immune system. Dr. Vollmer holds a degree in Biology from the University of Freiburg and has a PhD in Immunology from the Max-Planck-Institute of Immunobiology.
Dr. Vollmer is Member of the Board of the biotechnology cooperation BioRiver e.V. in North Rhine-Westphalia.
“With his broad experience in Discovery & Development and the pharmaceutical industry Dr. Vollmer is the ideal candidate for this key position within our company”, said Dr. Hanjo Hennemann, CSO and founder of Nexigen. “Nexigen’s proprietary peptide platform has the potential to enable successful development of peptide modulators targeting disease mechanisms which traditionally have not been accessible for drug discovery. I am excited to work with Hanjo Hennemann and his team and to contribute to the future success of Nexigen”, comments Dr. Jörg Vollmer, Managing Director and CEO of Nexigen.
The appointment of Dr. Vollmer as CEO of Nexigen strengthens the company in its process to become one of the leading drug developers for innovative therapeutics with novel potentially superior properties and associated important USPs.

Nexigen attracts MIG as new investor for the development of novel cancer therapeutics

link 2011-06-01

Nexigen GmbH, a biopharmaceutical company closed a financing round totalling 4.1 mio Euro with the participation of new and existing investors. The fresh capital enables Nexigen to reach strategic goals in the development of novel drugs against cancer by 2013:

The drug candidates result from Nexigen‟s technology platform, which allows the access to so far inaccessible mode of actions of drugs. This enables the development of drugs with novel potentially superior properties and associated important USPs.

Besides AT Newtec GmbH and FCP Biotech GmbH as existing investors MIG fonds participated for the first time in the current financing round. The capital of this round shall be used for the further development of Nexigen‟s lead project in oncology. The goal is to show efficacy in suitable preclinical models. Furthermore an additional project in the area of cancer research, which has been started early in 2011, shall be taken further Nexigen‟s technology platform includes screening systems in living cells. These systems allow for the identification of drug precursors under natural conditions in a unique way and feature a high hit rate and the identification of relevant molecules. This results in a significant saving of time and effort during further development. Additional components of the technology platform allow for the efficient optimization of the identified drug precursors. Nexigen develops a novel class of cell- permeable peptide therapeutics for the modulation of disease mechanisms, which are not addressable for common small molecule drugs or therapeutic antibodies.

„I am happy that we could attract MIG, one of the most active biotech VCs in Europe. Very important for us is also the continuous commitment of AT Newtec. The closing of the recent financing round will allow Nexigen to further validate its technologies using its own drug candidates. We expect that Nexigen is able to claim an outstanding position in the young field of cell permeable peptide therapeutics by taking advantage of its innovative technology and the early start”, adds Dr Hanjo Hennemann, CEO and co-founder of Nexigen.

“The smart technological approach in combination with the astonishingly high degree of integration of Nexigen‟s research expertise convinced us” comments Dr. Matthias Kromayer, member of the executive board of MIG Verwaltungs AG. „We are happy to welcome the Nexigen-team with its entrepreneurial spirit in our portfolio.‟

Nexigen presenting at TIDES conference (May 22 - 25, 2011; Boston, MA, USA)

link 2011-05-09

This year’s Peptide Therapeutics part of the TIDES conference is focusing on “Modulators of Previously "Undruggable" Targets and Disease Mechanisms”. Recently a novel class of drugs, cell-permeable peptides, appeared under the radar of biotech and pharma companies. These peptide modulators are able to target disease mechanisms, which traditionally have not been accessible for drug discovery, resulting in drugs with high USPs. Dr Hanjo Hennemann, Executive Director and Head of R&D, Nexigen GmbH will talk at TIDES and will give insights to this emerging field, discuss novel modes of actions, and provide examples from the use of Nexigen's discovery platform of intracellular peptide modulators.
